Asparagus is naturally carbohydrate low and also low in calories and fat. It is an excellent source of vitamin K or folate, and a good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, riboflavin, and thiamin.

Because of its high levels of folate, asparagus is excellent for heart health. Ancient cultures believed it to be an aphrodisiac, though that is now known to be a myth. It is said to help with blood flow and fetal nervous system development in utero. This is presumably why many OB GYNs recommend asparagus to their patients.

Asparagus contains a certain enzyme that humans have a difficult time digesting called inulin. This is actually a good thing because the beneficial bacteria in our digestive tracts love it. When they thrive, we should experience less harmful bacterial infections.

An average serving contains up to 288 mg of potassium and less than 19.8 of sodium. Combined with the enzyme called asparagines which is very prevalent in each asparagus spear, the food makes a good natural diuretic.
