Artichokes are Fine

If artichokes were poisonous then they wouldn't be sold in almost every single grocery store and served at thousands of restaurants around the world. They wouldn't be part of many cultural dishes, or be a vegetable that many doctors and nutritionists recommend to people every single day.

Artichokes have been eaten for hundreds if not thousands of years and, as far as I've heard, nobody has died of it due to it containing a poisonous substance intrinsically. You'll see people ask the question on online forums and blogs and so rumors have likely started to circulate after the question was asked so many times.

Artichokes can be harmful to eat if you don't know how to eat them properly. If you ate the leaves, the stem and the furry part that's within you would probably feel awful. But nobody generally does because the leaves are so hard and the other parts not palatable that they intuitively would know not to eat those parts after trying one bite.

Some people get upset stomachs after eating artichokes in the same way they would if they ate cabbage, broccoli, leak or onions but that's a far cry from being poisoned. There is a story online of one man who didn't know how to eat artichokes properly and ended up ingesting the entire thing. He went through a lot of pain and apparently sued the restaurant afterward. But again that's not a poison issue.

So so in a nutshell artichokes can upset your stomach, it can cause flareups for people with IBS, or it can cause general discomfort but it is not poisonous in the sense that we know it to be.

Hope this was helpful.
